as well, and were not held in high repute. During the Middle Ages, med-
icine as a science was completely lost. In the seventeenth century, the
importance of educated physicians became recognized, and practitioners
assumed proper rank. The druggist, too, became recognized as an import-
ant member of society. During this century, the real value of the drug-
gist has been demonstrated, and colleges of pharmacy have been estab-
lished with the power of conferring degrees, and the business assigned
rank with the professions. The drug trade of this, or any other city, is
one of the most important factors in the general make-up, and it exercises
an influence not outmeasured by any other branch of business. The firm
of Dowling & Flood, druggists, was established in 1881 with but moderate
capital, who, after continuing business with more than usual success, were
succeeded in 1885 by C. W. Clawson & Co., the present proprietors. With
regard to this well-known house, but little can be said that is not already
known of its importance and continued success, beyond stating the plain
facts. The extent of the business fully attests the success which has uni-
formly characterized the management of this establishment, and the high
standard of business ability, integrity and enterprise, which has been the
rule in conducting their affairs. The large trade of the house has been
built up by sheer business ability, pluck and executive, force, the increase
having been steadier and more substantial than generally falls to the lot
of mercantile establishments. And all these characteristics and business
qualities will be found .to exist in the new firm; and in all those enterpris-
ing ideas which are so characteristic of modern progress, they will be found
to be fully endowed. Mr. Clawson brings to the business an active prac-
tical experience of years, having been connected with some of the leading
houses of New Orleans. The stock carried is complete and comprehensive,
including foreign and domestic chemicals, drugs, pharmaceutical prepara-
tions, proprietary medicines, fancy and toilet articles, and druggists' sun-
dries generally, and all such goods as are to be found in well-ordered
establishments of the kind, in great variety. Mr. Clawson is a thoroughly
skilled, scientific and practical druggist, having been connected with the
business from his youth. In the prescription department of his business,
he enjoys a high reputation and possesses the best qualifications as an ac-
complished pharmacist. His knowledge and long practical experience
enable him to fully meet all the requirements of his profession. The bus-
iness premises are commodious and convenient at No. 340 Houston street,
the principal business thoroughfare of the city, consisting of a handsome
and conveniently located building, specially adapted for the purpose, 50 by
65 feet in extent. Three assistants are employed in various capacities.
Mr. Clawson carries stock averaging $10,000 in value, his annual transac-
tions averaging $15,000. His facilities for doing business and unexception-
able qualifications for its management are unsurpassed by any house in
the South, while his experience of years is unquestionable guarantee of
his ability. B e gives his constant personal attention to his business, en-
suring fair dealing, accuracy in filling orders and prescriptions, and prompt
attention.
