                                   COMMERCE AND MANUFACTURES.
             M. ECKENROTH & SON—Manufacturers and Dealers in Buggies, Car-
riages, Ambulances, Spring Wagons. Repairing of all kinds done
promptly. Established in 1855. Nos. 212 and 214 Market Street,
                   near Bridge.
Among the many branches of business carried on in cities, there are
none which contribute more to the general convenience, and none that are
stronger auxiliaries in facilitating trade, than that of wagon and coach
making. But few of the trades or commercial pursuits could transact

business without them. But for the convenience and facility afforded by
the handiwork of the coachmaker in his various products, the wheels of
commerce would be locked or move but slowly. It is, therefore, in its
general results and effects on other branches, one of the most useful of
trades; and in this, as in every other pursuit in life, some men outstrip
others, are more successful. This is the result of industry, better practical
knowledge of the trade, and honest pride in their work. The firm that
establishes a character for first-class work, the use of the best materials in
quality and proper seasoning, and, of equal consequence, honorable deal-
ing, can be assured of success, and reputation and prosperity is but a ques-
tion of time. San Antonio is specially indebted to this class of
manufacturers, who, by their own sheer industry and enterprise, have raised them-
selves to prominence, and by the honest exercise of their talents, have
carved out of fortune's uncertainties a certainty of their own. To no es-
tablishment in San Antonio do these remarks apply with stronger force
than to that of M. Eckenroth. This business was established in 1855 by
